Acting Assistant Principal Viola
Christopher McKay joined the Phoenix Symphony viola section in 2008. He has served in many capacities as orchestral musician, chamber musician, soloist, and teacher. Christopher’s past engagements include interim viola in the Louisville Orchestra, substitute with the Indianapolis Symphony, Principal Viola of the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, asst. principal of New Jersey Opera, Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra, and the Owensboro Symphony. His summer engagements include fellowships at Tanglewood Music Center, Spoleto Festival USA, and the Artur Balsam Chamber Music Workshop.
During 2001-07 Christopher was violist of the Eykamp String Quartet, the resident string quartet for the Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra and the University of Evansville. His solo engagements with the EPO include Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante and Strauss’ Don Quixote, and was a regular recitalist at the University of Evansville.
Christopher’s teaching experience encompasses a wide range of ages including Adjunct Instructor of Viola at the University of Evansville,visiting instructor at Indiana University-Bloomington, Indiana University-Southeast Summer String Clinic, Blue Lake Arts Camp, as well as Columbus Symphony Orchestra (Indiana) Summer Music Clinic.
Mr. McKay received his viola performance degrees from Louisiana State University (BM) and Indiana University (MM). His primary teachers were Julian Wilkison, Jerzy Kosmala and Alan deVeritch, with additional instruction from Paul Neubauer and James
